Automated safety systems in vehicles save lives

Every year it seems that automakers come out with a new safety gadget. Although many of these technologies might seem "gimmicky," new research shows that some of them are actually saving lives.

Two recent studies reveal that cars equipped with automated monitoring systems get in fewer vehicle collisions than normal cars. According to the studies, the technology could prevent tens of thousands of crashes every year if all cars were equipped.

Results of safety studies on automated vehicle monitoring

According to the findings of the research, lane departure warning systems reduce non-injury single vehicle collisions, head-on collisions and sideswipe accidents by 11 percent. The systems reduce injury collisions of the same kind by 21 percent. Blind spot warning systems were also useful in this regard, reducing non-injury crashes of this type by 14 percent and injury crashes by 23 percent.

The leader of the study, said in a recent interview, "This is the first evidence that lane departure warning is working to prevent crashes of passenger vehicles on U.S. roads." She said that the study results show that numerous lives could be saved as these technologies become more prevalent in the United States.

Nothing replaces paying attention to the road and common sense

As advanced as safety features become, until human drivers are replaced with robotic computer driving systems, the dangers of getting into an accident with an inattentive, risk-taking, rule-breaking, bad decision-making driver will continue. If drivers would pay attention to the road, follow all of the rules, refrain from distractions like cellphones and refrain from driving while intoxicated, the vast majority of injurious and fatal auto collisions would probably be avoided in our country.

At the very least, when someone gets hurt by an inattentive, negligent, reckless or unlawful driver, the injured person will have the ability to pursue financial justice and restitution in court. If you have been injured in a car accident -- due to no fault of your own -- you may want to educate yourself on your legal rights and options.
